Street Division

The Public Works Department provides several services to the Town including streets, parks, water system management, and sanitation services. Employees in the department are responsible for the preservation, maintenance, and expansion of the Town’s infrastructure system which includes approximately 12 miles of public streets. Public Works staff also maintain Town parks and greenways. All streets inside the Town of Mars Hill are not repaired/maintained by the Public Works Department. Many streets in Town are owned and maintained by the NC. Department of Transportation.

The enhancement and improvement of the aesthetic beauty of the community is a primary mission of the entire organization and the Department contributes to this mission by ensuring that this system of infrastructure is properly maintained and enhanced to allow our residents and visitors safe access to the community and its beauty.

Sanitation Division
The Sanitation Division manages trash, recycling, and brush collection, including bulky items and white goods. 

Sanitation - FaQTrash Collection: The Town collects trash once a week on Monday. Trash cans or bags should be placed on the curbside by 7:30am on collection day.

Recycle Collection: Recycle goods are collected every Thursday and the items may be mixed (commingled) for pick up. The town transports recycled materials to a third party materials recovery facility for processing. Click here for more information on how to prepare your materials for proper recycling.

Alternate Collection Days: If Monday or Thursday is a Holiday, trash will be collected the next day. In the event of snow or ice, collection will be scheduled as soon as roads are safe.

Furniture and Large Items: These items are picked up on Friday. If you have questions about materials such as used appliances to be collected, call Town Hall regarding these items. 

Yard Waste: Yard wastes such as grass clippings, leaves, and small shrub clippings should be bagged and placed at the curb for pickup.  Other yard waste such as small limbs are subject to the regulations of our curbside yard waste contractor as described below:

• Tree limbs must be no more than eight (8) feet in length AND a diameter of less than three (3) inches
• Limbs must be neatly stacked at the curb
• The maximum volume of collection at each home on any one day's collection cannot exceed eight (8) feet long by five (5) feet wide by five (5) feet high of tied bundles
• They WILL NOT collect limbs for work done by a tree service company.  
• Any material not meeting these specifications WILL NOT be collected
• Tree limbs are collected one time of the month, usually during the last full week of each month

County Disposal Facilities: The county operates a trash/recycling center on Parkway View Drive for residents of Madison County. The center is open Monday-Friday, 7:30am-6:00pm and Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm.
